about

The Smallgoods are Lachlan Franklin, Gus Franklin, Ben Mason and Ben Donnan

Last time we met The Smallgoods, it was way back in the misty yesteryear of 2012. We watched them ride off into the sunset in a cloud of dank smoke, whistling tunes we’d grown to love, but sensed we would never hear again. After years spent down on the farm, the band rode off the ranch and into the woods...

Almost seven years since their final show, The Smallgoods are now back from the wilderness with a fresh set of legs, a batch of new songs, and melodies to burn.

The band, which originally hails from the verdant depths of South Western Victoria, first fully formed in Melbourne in the early 2000’s, regularly haunting establishments like The Rob Roy, The Punters Club and The Tote. They gained a loyal wide-eyed following drawn to their guitar pop sensibilities, reminiscent of 60’s garage and psychedelia, drenched in melodic and harmonic vocals. Over a ten-year-plus period, they produced three critically acclaimed albums and attracted listeners around Australia and overseas with their adventurous song writing, frivolous nature, and lush live performances.

The band quietly reconvened in recent times to begin writing again. This process culminated in a ten-day recording session, holed-up in the forest surrounds of Sassafras – in the Dandenong Ranges – recording a long-awaited follow-up to their sprawling 2006 album Down on the Farm (Lost & Lonesome).

And now, heralding the return of The Smallgoods is their first single from these efforts, titled 'Satellite'.

In a familiar turn for the band, it is a shimmering tune with delicate melodies and soaring guitars. Driving drums laden with chugging acoustic guitars form a soundscape reminiscent of Teenage Fanclub had they been produced by Jeff Lynne.

These glowing pop sounds are draped on a lyrical backdrop with a dark underbelly that paints a familiar modern landscape where everything is possible but nothing is real...

'Satellite' is out on March 1, 2019.

The Smallgoods' new album Lost in the Woods will be released in June 2019 through The Lost and Lonesome Recording Co.
